Canadian Rockhound – Dirk developed and maintained a unique web-based educational geology magazine (7 years) as a hobby. He began the magazine while he was a grad student in Saskatoon, and published many articles related to the mineral and fossil collecting hobby, until 2005. A copy of this website has been archived by the National Library of Canada.

Dirk has also travelled to Europe, visiting Germany, Italy, Spain. In 2001 he spent two weeks Japan as part of a technology tour. An avid hiker Dirk enjoys camping and hiking the Canadian Rockies in Alberta and British Columbia. To date, he’s completed more than 2000 km of trails throughout all the mountain national parks. In total, he has been to 12 National Parks in Canada, the latest being Prince Albert National Park in Saskatchewan.

St. Boniface Diocesan High School Experience:

Dirk’s overall experience at SBDHS was great. It was a good environment, safe, and respect was evident student to student and staff to student. Since Dirk came from a previous school bullying experience, St. B helped him to build self-esteem which led to a strong year in Grade 12 at St. B.

Dirk was involved in co-curriculars such as the Chess Club with Mr. Boyko, and outside the school, he took piano lessons and completed exams through the Royal Conservatory of Music. Faith was very present in the school and it was a safe place to practice faith with enthusiasm. Dirk finds himself much stronger in his faith these days. He attends adoration and reconciliation regularly, has organized a number of Catholic men’s nights, and helps out with youth ministry as well.

St. B and St. Charles played an important role in his life. According to Dirk, “I don’t think I would be where I am today without those schools.”

Proudest Moment:

Dirk’s proudest moment at his St. B graduation; to his great surprise, he received an award for having the top marks in biology in grade 12.

Best Advice:

St. B has a welcoming community that needs to be known and shared. This school is a great place to perform academically, social and physically in sports. If you can, you definitely should!
