Cantamus Concert, May 23, 2018 7:00 pm, St. Bernadette Parish - Choirs from St. Boniface Diocesan High School, St. Paul’s High School and St. Mary’s Academy came together on May 23rd to sing together in a collaborative concert entitled Cantamus. The word comes from the Latin word meaning to sing, and sing they did! Each school presented songs of their own, providing wonderful moments of music prepared by each choir.
St. Paul’s Junior choir lead the event with some exciting men’s chorus numbers, finishing their set with The Log Driver’s Waltz.
St. Boniface choir followed with two beautiful a cappella songs, Torn Screen Door and Run to You, and continued with a beautiful collaboration with the St. Mary’s choir, The Parting Glass.
St. Mary’s continued the concert with their own three numbers, providing beautiful harmonies, and piano and string accompaniment with their pieces, Furaha (meaning “Joy”), O Beautiful Gaia, and Viva La Vida.
The St. Paul’s senior choir encouraged us with their set of songs, three pieces that showcased their developing men’s voices.
The concert concluded with a set of three mass choir pieces, combining the voices of all the singers in two exciting African folk tunes, Tshotsholoza and Hlonolofatsa, surrounding a haunting Requiem dedicated to the victims of the tsunami in India in 2004.
Congratulations to all of the performers for a wonderful concert, and to the conductors of the choirs, Paulo Borges and Denis Costa (St. Paul’s High School), Anastasia Geras (St. Mary’s Academy), and Greg Cooper (St. Boniface High School). We look forward to many more events such as this from these choirs!
